Biography
Dr. Andrew Newberg is the director of research at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health and a physician at Jefferson University Hospital. Board-certified in internal and nuclear medicine, he explores the connection between brain function and religious or mystical experiences. His work blends neuroscience and spirituality, using brain imaging to study prayer, meditation, ritual, trance, and their effects on health and memory.
Newberg began this path in medical school, collaborating with Dr. Eugene d'Aquili to pioneer research on how the brain engages in religious experience. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining scientific rigor while respecting the distinct role of religion.
Beyond spirituality, his neuroimaging research spans aging, dementia, Parkinson's disease, depression, and epilepsy. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed articles and 14 books translated into 17 languages. Recognized as one of the "30 Most Influential Neuroscientists Alive Today," his work has appeared on major media platforms including CNN, ABC, Dr. Oz, and in films such as What the Bleep Do We Know? and Religulous.
Newberg's research continues to shape the emerging field of neurotheology, bridging science and the sacred in a quest to better understand the human mind and spirit.
