Biography
Dr. Qayyim Naoki Yamamoto is an artist, translator, and scholar currently serving as Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Turkic Studies at Marmara University in Istanbul. He earned his PhD from the Graduate School of Asia and Africa Studies at Kyoto University in 2018. His academic work bridges Islamic mysticism and Japanese cultural traditions, with a particular focus on Ottoman Tasawwuf (Sufism) and classical Japanese arts.
Deeply engaged in traditional Japanese practices, Dr. Yamamoto is a dedicated student of the Tea Ceremony and Japanese Swordsmanship. His interdisciplinary research draws on these cultural forms to explore the spiritual and aesthetic dimensions of comparative mysticism. Among his notable publications are a Japanese translation of Sulami's Kitāb al-Futuwwa, a foundational text on Islamic ethical chivalry, and Introduction to Tasawwuf: A Comparison with Shonen Manga, published in the Shueisha Web Essay Series.
Blending deep philological knowledge with artistic insight, Dr. Yamamoto's work seeks to foster cross-cultural understanding through scholarship, translation, and embodied practice. Based in Istanbul, he continues to contribute to global conversations on spirituality, ethics, and the dialogue between Islamic and East Asian intellectual traditions.
